My story for Dead End 4
Earth Keepers – Tory’s Travels
By Luke Page
Tory is a normal dude who has been searching for the answers to life’s great mysteries for a long time. He is fascinated by the unexplained and has a very curious mind. He lives a lonely life as a student in archeology, a subject he finds himself to be somewhat passionate about. One day, Tory’s school organizes a field trip to Mongolia lead by renowned archeology experts. The trip goes well and Tory has a great time learning about ancient civilizations, visiting temples… There was one peculiar temple which he could not get out of his mind. It was the last one they visited before returning home; a temple dedicated to the Khangarid a.k.a. Garuda. The Khangarid is depicted in Hinduism and Buddhism as a large humanoid bird or angel. Many statues resided in this temple, some 2 to 3 times taller than Tory. As awe-inspiring and perplexing as the Khangarid statues were to him, it is a particular patterned wall deep within the temple which caught his attention the most during the trip. The wall (as well as many other artifacts and structures) was presented by one of the lead archeologists as a recent discovery made during an on-going dig, he would later add that people are currently debating on whether or not the patterns can be deciphered.

When Tory gets home he feels very differently
about his surroundings, he loses interest in everything but the pattern on the
temple wall in Mongolia. That very night, Tory is taken back to the temple wall
in a dream; the patterns on the wall form a bird-like shape which glows and
magically flies through the wall, revealing a dark tunnel. After walking in the
darkness for a while, Tory finds himself in a room with walls made of light covered
by great long vines. Out of the dark, on the other side of the room, comes the
bird who guided Tory here. The bird is called Dode the Dweller, it telepathically
communicates with Tory, tells him that it’s a pleasure to be visited and that
it was been waiting for a long time for something like this. Dode offers Tory a
wish and he instantly asks for the ability to fly; the eagle is amused because
flight is such a trivial thing to it. Dode explains that humans are meant to
find out how to fly on their own and in exchange for this gift it needs Tory’s
memories. He accepts.
Tory awakens in a hospital bed a year after
the field trip to Mongolia. He is overcome by a great fear of this environment.
While attempting to escape the hospital, doctors and scientists who wish to
study his amnesia manage to corner him in a room on a high floor. He leaps out
the window and flies off in the distance.

FADE IN:
EXT.
PARK – MORNING
The sound of falling rain pounds
in the background. Slowly DODE, a monkey with grey fur and purple eyes, appears
high in a tree. Sitting under another tree nearby, silver hair and green eyed young
woman FELICITY is holding herself close silently crying.
A young man, IRURI, black
hair and red eyed, walks past, he stops and conjures an umbrella from his mind,
FELICITY looks up, IRURI blushes, she walks away. IRURI follows her.
IRURI
I was only trying to help
IRURI pulls at her sleeve,
FELICITY, slaps him away.
FLASH

EXT. ALLEYWAY – LATE NIGHT
A
teenage FELICITY is held at knife point, her mother, ALICIA, goes to hand over
her wallet but mid action lunges at the robber. The blade only draws little
blood as it slides across FELICITY’S throat; it is then thrust into ALICIA’s
heart. ZED, her father, gives chase. FELICITY is left with her mother’s
lifeless body.
FLASH
TO BLACK:
EXT. PARK – MORNING
IRURI’s facial expressions register that he too has seen the vision; he holds his throat as tears start to form. FELICITY goes to hold IRURI.

A teenage IRURI is playing
in the corridor creating objects from his mind.
INT.
KITCHEN – EVENING
IRURI enters the kitchen
creating a tennis racket, which accidently hits his mother ZYRA while she is
preparing dinner.
ZYRA is infuriated and swinging
around with a knife, lunges towards IRURI, he puts his hands up in confusion
and defense. The knife slices into his hands; she then kicks him away and holds
her head.
ZYRA
UGH! I’m so sick of your
shit!
IRURI creates a skateboard
on which she slips and falls. IRURI runs before she has time to recover.
FLASH
TO BLACK:
EXT.
PARK – MORNING
FELICITY
and IRURI are still holding each other, crying in the rain. DODE watches on
quietly.
A yellow
eyed SLOTH crawls out of the fountain behind them.
MONTAGE:
EXT.
PARK – MORNING TO EVENING
A fast sped-up montage of the rain getting heavier, the sun zooming across the sky and finally the moon taking its place; reveals the two falling asleep on the other side of the tree FELICITY was initially crying under. Meanwhile, the SLOTH, which originally appeared normal sized, has now become huge and towers over them.

EXT. PARK – EVENING
The
couple awakens to the sight of the SLOTH swinging its claw at them. They both
cringe. DODE leaps in front of the SLOTH's swing and gets knocked away from the
fight, unconscious.

IRURI
I got this
I got this
IRURI
charges at the SLOTH. FELICITY on the other hand, faces it and closes her eyes as
she lifts her hand and slowly conjures a van (balancing on its rear bumper)
with her mind. IRURI runs towards the giant SLOTH, wielding his umbrella in his
right hand and using his left to create steps he proceeds to climb. IRURI jumps
on the SLOTH's shoulders; he hits it on the head 3 times, turning the umbrella
into a baseball bat and a sledge hammer for the final blow. Satisfied IRURI
jumps off SLOTH, which now looks dizzy and in pain.
FELICITY
Ah
funggit (funk it)!
FELICITY
finishes the SLOTH off by giving the van a light push, squishing it right down,
fan dangled. FELICITY and IRURI look at each other and smile. IRURI looks at
DODE, who is still unconscious. FELICITY, standing the closest to him, picks
him up and cradles him.
FELICITY
Thank
you mister Dode
IRURI
Is
that his name? Groovy I like it! Hey Dode (pokes DODE’s cheek)
IRURI
(cont’d)
I’m
Iruri by the way
FELICITY
Felicity,
it was really nice meeting you
IRURI
You
too
IRURI
throws his arm over FELICITY’s shoulder and makes an umbrella large enough to
shield the three of them from the rain. DODE opens his eyes, gazes at the
couple then closes them again.
ENDING CREDITS –

ending credits are a slow fade to black featuring the three protagonists
walking into the distance in a looping animation.

Hyun, his dojo, and next generation stickfigure animating.
There are many websites on the internet where people are invited to share their creativity and exchange ideas with people around the globe. Any animator can post their projects on youtube or facebook but it is on one of the many websites made for-animators-by-animators that they will be able to generate a stable vewer/fan base.
Hyun is a youtube celebrity who joined youtube on April 28th 2008, he is one of the worlds greatest stickfigure animators. With hundreds of solo and collaborative works Hyun was welcomed to youtube with open arms. Evidence suggests that Hyun has been working hard to expand the stckfigure animating community over the years, posting tutorials on how to use Flash and hinting at large scale collaborations featuring animators he met over the years.
On November 17th 2012 the youtube channel and website known as ''Hyun's Dojo'' was created. Considered the heart of stick figure animation, the dojo is place where you can watch, socialise and share anything that has to do with animation, it wasn't strictly made for stick figures only, anyone can join.
Hyun and his dojo continue to have always inspired me, the next generation effects and use of light have always left me flabbergasted at the end of the videos. Their early videos (some of the recent ones too) would usually focus on the animation itself and the animators' improvment.
Some of Hyun's recent videos show alot of thought processing, swinging emotions left and right in
an attempt to reel in the viewers.
Hyun's 4-part series ''League of Legends - Stickfigure Spotlight'' was inspired by the Massive Multiplayer Online Battle Arena e-sport (played by proffessionals and live streamed) League of Legends. They are by far his most popular works with the first part sitting on more than 12million views. The Stickfigure Spotlight series have proven themselves to be the ultimate stickfigure tribute to League of Legends and have been played live in front of audiences during proffessional gaming events.

Scanned sketches
I've been wanting to use a tablet and make cartoons for a long time now. So long a time that I've gathered quite a lot of drawings over the years, knowing that one day the oportunity to animate them would come.
I drew this following little A4 comic about two years ago in Japan because I really wanted to animate something but didn't have the means to. Little did I know that comic (were it to be turned into an animation) would follow one of the 12 basic principles of animation. Pose to pose.
